if the TP valve on your water heater starts spraying water, is the wtr htr salvageable?
I got it to reseat and relit the pilot. it was flooded and had to be dried out. can i go business as usual? should i change TP valve? i will pipe it away from appl. to avoid future flooding.
The TP valve is a relief valve sensitive to temperature (T) or pressure (P). Either of these can cause it to open up and dump water. If the valve has lifted there is every reason to believe it may do so again. The valve can be replaced with minimal effort or time but the condition that caused it to open may not be resolved. TP valves are like any other mechanical device meaning they will fail sooner or later. You will need to replace it with another rated for the same settings as the original valve. You will need to determine why the valve opened in the first place. I would recommend that you have the water heater checked out by someone qualified and competent. A 50 gallon water heater can be very destructive if it fails. It has all the destructive force of a stick of dynamite if it blows up. Be safe and call a professional. It could be a faulty thermostat or it could be just an old and worn out TP valve.
