A University Should Involve Students, Alumni And Residents In Logo Design
A major university recently made headline news and was called "foolish" by local media after a simple re-design of its school logo was said to be an abomination by its students and area residents. I don't believe this to be true, and I do have some perspective on this working for a marketing communications agency, and I believe that the coverage given to the supposed scandal has overlooked some of the key factors that should be considered. Obtain further advice on crowdsource logo design and the subject of design.
A delay occurred in issuing graphic standards for both the university seal and the use of the logo, and the university agrees it was an oversight on their part to not consider the opinion of students. But the university wasn't in the wrong in doing what it did, besides these things that they admit openly were the wrong decisions.
Deciding to assimilate the logo and the seal of the university, so that they may be used jointly, is a positive change that should be taken into account. One rule of all graphic identity programs is that institutions need to have their logos standardized; if an institution doesn't standardize logo marks, the public will have a hard time recognizing the logos and what it represents.
The administration should really be praised for making a prudent business decision and improving the brand of the institution. Most people don't realize how hard a task it is to design the perfect logo design. With the logo, you are trying to capture the complete essence of the institution, from it's sciences, to it's sports, which is a tall order. I have been a party to many heated debates regarding changes to be made with corporate logs, and I assure you that it is not for the faint of heart. A logo is a significant and timeless symbol of a university and those people who are shocked at the reported $20,000 logo designer fee must remember this is still only a fraction of printing and other costs which a school makes use of to convey its own, unique identity. There are reasons behind the fact that whenever a new logo is adopted by an institution, there are people who will become upset.
Most people have a problem with change, especially when the change is to a symbol that they are emotionally invested in. Another reason is because people use the change of a logo as a reason to bring up other issues they may have with the institution. Another problem is the fact that people feel like they are able to judge a logo that someone who is professionally trained in the area has designed.
Adopting a new logo is a time consuming process. It is ignorant to believe that everyone will simply jump on board with the change, after almost 120 years of unofficial symbols and well known typefaces, and only a seal as the only clear representative. I'm aware of a fair number of people in businesses who choose to use their old company logos, or logos which they have unofficially throw together themselves, despite reprimands from management. Even though the reprimand is promised, it's never followed through because even the managers have a problem adopting a new logo. To no surprise, some of the old symbols that were used were still in use.
Even though the university should have gotten some of the feedback from students on the logo design, they should also let them know that if they allowed everyone to have their say in the design, it would be almost impossible to come to a decision.
There are strict standards that define whether or not a logo will succeed at its purpose; it must be familiar immediately, and it must be recognizable anywhere and evoke the message of the institution. Not only that, but they should also contain a consistent identity program and need a standards manual. In my opinion, the new logo meets all of these requirements, or is well on it's way to doing so. The university started out with nothing specific so even though the students don't completely agree with the logo design, it is better than what they had before, which was nothing specific.
