What is wrong with my heating?
I have a multi stage, multi zone heating and cooling system. For the last several days, there has been no heat downstairs. My oil tank was reading "E" so my first thought was that it had emptied - I had the tank filled and still no heat. The driver told my wife that it was likely the thermostat. I spent the last hour wiring a new thermostat and still nothing..... what else could be wrong?
If you had heat upstairs but not downstairs then the problem must be unique to the downstairs zone: thermostat, fan (if you have forced air) or pump/valve (if you have hot water heat). If you're confident that you've eliminated the thermostat, then you can move on to those other items.
The fact that your oil tank was empty and you had it filled leads me to suspect that you may have had no heat at all (and maybe it was just more noticeable downstairs, as heat rises). In that case, you can add the furnace to the list. Oil furnaces, especially older ones, can have problems restarting after running the tank dry (air in the fuel line, clogged filters, etc).
