Night fog settles moist to the valley floor
as if I'm floating on undulating waves
I step out from my forest cabin door.
Stars flicker, through the canopy over the porch
not enough light I think I'll just sit
I step back retrieving a Kerosene torch.
Oak leaves in a gentle breeze, teased
Dew comes heavy as does dark chilled
glistening as do nettles, I inhale, pleased
There are subtle sounds I most enjoy,
mating calls, relating
melodies woodland critters employ
in song. Such is the way on the Lake shore.
not so disturbed by me.
I open to hear, absorb, and adore
The flapping wings of a Moonlit Hawk resound
swift with night sight
then a squeak, nocturnal prey found.
Gather I must, split logs for the fire
curling into my favorite chair
flames lick, wood fed, grow higher.
This is my dream time late
sap and Pine knots pop as burned
take to sleep, what the mind will create.
