Heating Oil: Are You Wasting Money?
You are probably wasting money if you are one of those people who use heating oil. This is because most of us fail to do all we can to keep our bills down. In actual fact, many people will waste a lot of money on this fuel over the course of a year. Thankfully there are ways that you can reduce the amount you spend on heating oil bills and below are a few of these ways.
- Many of us do not bother to keep an eye on the price of heating oil so that we could fill up our tanks when the prices are lower. This means that we will often be forced to fill up our tank during a cold snap when oil prices are true the roof. You can save quite a bit of money if you track the prices of oil and it won't take a lot of effort on your part.
- Never allow your heating oil to completely run out. You could find that you have to pay over the odds for your oil if you need to order an emergency delivery. It is important to ensure that you have ordered a new delivery of oil before your oil gets too low.
- Think about turning down the thermostat by one or two degrees to see if you are still comfortable with the heat. A lot of us overheat our homes and this means that we are wasting money. You could even find it more comfortable with your heating down as well as the fact that you will be saving money.
- Get familiar with the timer switch on your heating system and start using it. A lot of people leave the heating on when there is nobody to benefit from it. It is nice for the house to be warm when you get home but that is what the timer is for.
Heating up someone's property in the cold months of wintertime may cost a fair packet. Fuel such as electricity and gas show no indications of coming down in price. Smart persons are changing over to oil as a home fuel though. Heating oil suppliers are the individuals given the job of always keeping home oil tanks full. Oil suppliers are established throughout the Uk, and will supply kerosene suppliers across the country through internet websites like Boiler Juice. You can also find out about red diesel prices.

If I mix used motor oil with kerosene could I use it as home heating fuel?
A friend of mine told me that he takes his used motor oil (from car oil changes) and pours it into his home heating oil tank. He says he has been doing this for a couple of years. The only downfall is that he has to chande the filter about twice as much. I figure that it might better to mix the used oil 1 to 1 with kerosene.
Used motor oil will smoke more and create a lot more soot in the chimney. Yes mixing it with furnace oil or kerosene will reduce the effects but still it'll make more smoke etc. The used oil has a lot of dirt in it so filtering first would be prudent as that dirt does not burn well and I would think could cause problems with the furnace burner.
There are used oil burners (furnaces actually) available but many states etc are banning them as being environmentally bad (not proven with facts). So see if burner can handle the thicker fluid flow.
Beauty of kerosene is it is quite a bit like furnace oil which is bunker 2 or winterized bunker 1. Bunker if filtered becomes diesel fuel. Yes kerosene can be burnt in a diesel motor but again it burns a little differently (not good for new 2007 engines).
