I have a 1976 c20 with a 350
The ignition module seems to be going out twice a year and it's pretty expensive for me to keep bringing it to a mechanic. How can I just change it myself? Where is it located?
What would be a reason it is going out so fast? How can I fix it?
It's just a failing start. I have to crank it forever until it finally turns over. Once it starts though it doesn't die.
It's under the distributor cap. Take the rotor off too, to get better access to it. It will look like the top picture here, when it's installed:

Unscrew the bolts holding it down to the base of the distributor, and unhook wires. When you put it back in, make sure you coat the entire bottom silver part of it with dielectric grease, and make sure the area where it sits is thoroughly clean. These 2 things being overlooked are the main cause of premature failure on this part, as this is a heat sink, and they will burn out without a good contact and the dielectric grease.
