Yeah this happened on a buddies 60's muscle car. No signs of anything being weak either, it just gave out and the fan dug into the radiator destroying it. Just wondering if you seen anything like this before. Thanks!
To avoid confusion, it didn't break completely off, just that the top portion of the fan dug into the rad.
Yes, I've seen plastic fans go through a closed bonnet, easily capable of killing someone! The reason is always the same. Either the viscous fan clutch is seized or locked together and the the angular speed of the the fan blade tips is greater than they were ever designed for and the fans literally explode.
Modern engine driven fans are NOT designed to be driven at the same speed as the water pump shaft.
