How can I start my own real website with a domain name, when I don’t know anything about web hosting?

July 13, 2010 - 4:01 am 7 Comments

Can anyone give me a little know-how about starting up a website? Perhaps some step-by-step about how to go from knowing nothing about this, to running a website? I think alot of people would benefit from this information besides just myself. I need to know some of the steps that I need to take to register a domain name, and how to host it. Some of the terms I’ve heard associated with this were MySQL and cPanel (I think). Does anyone know what these terms mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot!

Step 1:
Register your domain name. You can register a domain name at yahoo or at godaddy.com.

Step 2:
Get web hosting. YOu can get web hosting thru Yahoo or Godaddy, or a gazillion other web hosting companies on line. You will likely only need a teeny bit of disk space for your site, but you may want to make sure you have at least 500mb of space so that you have enough room to have email accounts associated with your website/domain. Get a UNIX/RedHat/Linux/Apache type account. You don’t need to pay for "windows" hosting. You should pay between $7 and $20 per month for hosting…. less, and you don’t know what kind of customer service you are going to get, more, and you are paying too much.

Step 3:
Go to the place where you registered your domain name and make sure your DNS is pointing to the place where you are hosting your website.

more explanation: if you register mycompany.com and your host is hostingcompany.com, you need to make sure your domain name is pointing to hosting company. your dns may look like this:

ns1.hostingcompany.com
ns2.hostingcompany.com

Often times your webhost will do the DNS transfer for you. You will need to tell them your regristrar account’s username and password. That’s their job. It’s ok to give it to them. You might want to change it afterwards though.

Side note: I recommend registering your own domain. Don’t have your hosting company register it for you, as you want to own your domain name and have it registered in your own name.

Step 4:
The next step, of course, is to create your website and then load it onto your server. You should learn XHTML and CSS to do a good job here. You only need a text editor such as notepad or textpad to create your site and the filemanager portion of your control panel (see below) to upload your files, but you can also go all out and get Dreamweaver, or other WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editor. I recommend Thomsons book "New Perspectives on HTML, XHTML, and Dynamic HTML, Comprehensive"

Terms:

MySQL:
MySQL is a type of database. If this is your first website and you asked the question you did, you likely will never need to use it. However, it is good to get a hosting package that allows for at least one MySQL database. You will only ever need one database, as you can have almost unlimited tables in this one database.

cPanel:
cPanel is a control panel for webhosting. It’s a type of control panel… brand name. It is a really great control panel. WHat is a control panel? A control panel is a GUI by which you can control your website. It includes file manager, where you can upload pages to your website (uploading means putting files from your computer onto your website that is hosted by your hosting company you picked in step 2), control of .htaccess, which allows you to set up password protected directories, email, which allows you to set a default account for your site as well as create email mail boxes and email forwards.

if i register a domain name with a hosting service is that in their name?

July 13, 2010 - 4:01 am 4 Comments

what i am trying to ask is if i buy a hosting and domain registration package if later i decide i want to change hosting services do i have control of that domain name or do they?

Most will register it in your name. But the best way is to register a domain name with a 3rd party, so if you decide to change hosting, your host can’t do anything to stop you, or to make it harder for you. And it’s really easy to do.
For example I host my sites with Dreamhost but register almost all the domain names with Namecheap http://www.namecheap.com (they have a new promo code every month, for the october it’s: indiansummer ($8.81))
It’s a good strategy even if you’re happy with your current host but want to move some of the higher traffic websites to a VPS or a dedicated server. The free domain(s) you get with your hosting plan, you can use for some less important websites, although they are all registered in your name so you can move them also, it’s just more of a hassle.

For the hosting I recommend either:
Godaddy Deluxe plan

http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy

Disk space: 150 GB
Bandwidth: 1500 GB
One discounted ($2.19) domain name with hosting
Unlimited domains and subdomains

Price: $6.99 (for monthly payments)
(I recommend it if you want to pay monthly.)

or

Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Their standard price is $9.95/month ($119.40/year)
but you can use the promo code PLUS and get
$50 discount +2 Free domain names.

Disk space: Unlimited
Bandwidth: Unlimited
2 Free domain names
Unlimited domains and subdomains
Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)
(I recommend it if you want to pay yearly.)

I need a web hosting and free domain name?

July 13, 2010 - 3:58 am 7 Comments

I know I asked this a few days later, but I after that I found out my Dad has Macromedia Dream Weaver 8 so I learned how to use it and created an awesome site, but I don`t know how to publish it. So I need to register a domain name (for free is often my price) with web hosting. Please give links and steps please.

With some web hosting companies you can get a free domain name with the purchase of their hosting package. It’s actually a better deal than getting them separate. Let me tell you a little about my experience with web hosting companies over the years. At times you will come across deals that are almost too good to be true – cheap web hosting with amazing features! There are hosts that while offering cheap prices do back that up with excellent performance and service, but there are things to be noted:

There are a lot of potential questions you must ask yourself, whilst bearing in mind other peoples reviews, their reputation, and ultimately – the price. I personally use http://www.top15hosting.com to read web hosting reviews and see what web host is getting the best reputation as well as the bad, which helps me decide who to stay away from.

Your experience might be different but I have many complaints from PowWeb and Dot5Hosting. Those companies just took my money and provided me with bad customer support and my websites would always be down. Today I use Just Host for my web hosting and I’m very satisfied. As long as you do a little research before buying your web hosting you will be fine.

what is the best web hosting company?
Should I buy the domain name and the hosting from the same company?
Is there any way I can get a deal on a premium domain name? Is it negotiable?

Thanks

Your best bet is at http://www.domaincityhosting.com because you can get the domain name for just $1.99 with a hosting plan.

I need to find a cheap domain name & hosting reg site.?

July 13, 2010 - 3:55 am 12 Comments

I have been to godaddy.com and they have a plan where you can pick a domain name (.net) and host it for like $10.00. But I am lookin for something for less then $8 because until monday, I only have $8 in my paypal lol. anyone know of a site I can get a domain name and host it for less then 8?

You need both a domain name and hosting if you want to host a website.

You do get some free space with your Godaddy domain name, put a real (paid) hosting is always better.

Anyway since you want to get it from Godaddy and for less than $8 you should be able to get it using the $7.49 promo link from http://www.webhostingtable.com
